Stunning San Jose ADU Adds Space for Hosting and Working

With their home featuring an expansive backyard, one San Jose family had dreams of better utilizing the space for quite some time. The homeowners pictured an ADU that could serve as a place for housing guests, working from home, and entertaining. Beyond that, the family saw building an ADU as just the first step in realizing their vision of transforming their backyard into the ultimate entertainment space — complete with a pool, fire pit, and outdoor kitchen.

Where Prefab Couldn’t Deliver, Cottage Did

The homeowners explored prefabricated ADUs first. But their backyard was unique in that it had two levels of elevation, meaning prefab options didn’t quite work for their property. Prefab also couldn’t allow for the specific design vision the homeowners had for their ADU. Enter: Cottage.

Right off the bat, the Cottage team worked closely with the homeowners to create a design that checked all their boxes. Cottage’s designers sized and placed the ADU footprint to fit seamlessly in the backyard, while maintaining a feeling of spaciousness. Knowing the homeowners wanted a contemporary feel, lots of natural light, and blending of the indoor and outdoor spaces, Cottage designers got to work bringing the vision to life.

Thanks to Cottage’s custom approach, the homeowners had the ability to hone their ADU design to exactly how they wanted it. And where they were eager to provide input in the design, they were glad to be able to sit back while Cottage handled permitting and the handoff to a Cottage trusted contractor partner.

The End Result: A Stunning Custom ADU

The final product? This gorgeous ADU features cedar wood siding, a vaulted ceiling, and a three-panel accordion door that gives the structure a distinct indoor-outdoor feel.

The family is already enjoying the ADU. In addition to using it as a workspace, they sometimes pile in for a special movie night (popcorn and all). There’s no doubt that their ADU has already transformed their backyard into an inviting hangout space.
