Santa Clarita Attached ADU for Multigenerational Living

For one couple in Santa Clarita, a city just north of Los Angeles, building an ADU was all about bringing their family closer together. Homeowner Kathy’s parents were aging and living alone a ways away, and on top of that, facing challenges with their health. Seeking a living solution for her parents, Kathy and her husband had already considered an assisted living home – but this didn’t feel like the right fit. They wanted the space to be functional for Kathy’s parents, have a modern feel, and for the ADU exterior to match the design of their main home. Their Cottage designer made it all happen.

The finished 1 bed, 1 den, 1 bath ADU integrates seamlessly into the family’s lovely backyard, and features the best view of the pool on the entire property. The exterior keeps with the design of the original house, and inside, the space is full of light. The shower is wheelchair accessible and equipped with grab bars for Kathy’s parents. And in addition to the nicely sized bedroom, the ADU also has an office/den to give them some extra living space.

Kathy’s parents are now happily moved in and enjoying their new home. Kathy and her husband are thrilled to have her parents nearby. As parents themselves, they also see the value of the ADU for their own aging-in-place down the line.
