Charming 1 Bedroom Redwood City In-Law Unit With a Surprise Feature

Nestled in the heart of Redwood City in the Woodside Plaza neighborhood, this property's grassy and open backyard space was a prime candidate for a detached backyard Cottage. The homeowner wanted a truly streamlined process and didn't want to put in a prefab ADU unit because it did not match their main home and took up too much of their backyard space. Last but not least, the owner had a key dream feature that nodded to their Finnish roots—a fully functional wooden sauna that accompanied the unit's master bathroom.

In response to the homeowner's needs, Cottage designed a custom one bedroom L-shaped detached ADU at 350 sq. ft to frame the backyard space while providing privacy from the main home. Features such as horizontal wood siding and a gabled roof make for a Cottage that matches the main home and gives it the backyard cottage, granny flat feel that the homeowner was looking for.

The existing house already sported a covered patio opening to the backyard space. As a result, the homeowner was looking for a similar design with the ADU entry open to the shared backyard. Double French doors with additional sidelite windows adds to the open, indoor-outdoor feeling of the kitchen, dining, and living room space, while a short hallway to the bedroom, closet, and large bathroom creates a private area within the 350 sq.ft space.
