Cottage designed and built this 720 sq. ft. 2 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom detached ADU for a recently retired couple looking to move into the ADU and rent out their main house to maximize income.

Our homeowners in South San Francisco recently retired and are looking for more space on their property. Their plan is to live in a new, comfortable ADU while maximizing rental income by renting out the main house. They had previously met trepidation from the city and had been discouraged by prefab options. They wanted a cost-effective ADU that was built to fit them and after seeing Cottage's design and estimate, decided to build their dream ADU project.

The couple was looking for a spacious 2 bedroom ADU, in an efficient footprint to optimize on cost. Meanwhile, the space needed to fit the features of a single family home - space for queen beds, full closets, and full size bathroom elements.

Ultimately, in an efficient 720 sq ft, we were able to include 2 full bathrooms as well as a walk in closet. Key features include a french door entry and a skylight above the kitchen to maximize the open concept living area with plenty of light.

Ultimately, the homeowners went with large picture windows and clean lines on the exterior for a modern look for the ADU. A personal favorite feature is the sliding glass door that connects the unit to a private outdoor space for that famous California outdoor living.
